Artist FAQ

  • How much are artists paid?

Artists are paid 75% of any order or commissioned piece. About 5% goes towards PayPal and credit card processing fees. The remaining 20% is reinvested into our artists by going towards site maintenance, site innovation, and to purchase advertising for our artists. (Why doesn't Ricature take a cut? Simple: we are more interested in promoting the talents of our artists and growing the site.)

  • What are customers charged for a drawing?

Customers are charged based on the number of people drawn in each photo. Most orders are of 1 or 2 people in a photo.

    People in Photo Price
    1 $1099
    2 $1999
    3 $2899
    4 $3799
    5 $4599
    6 $5399

  • Why is pricing discounted for multiple people in a photo?

As much as possible, Ricature wants to encourage multiple-people drawings because these are much more likely to be shared socially over and over again (which result in repeat drawings). Customers expressed that flat per-person pricing discouraged multiple-people drawings.

Additionally, let's face it--when drawing 6 people in one drawing, each individual is naturally not going to get the same level of detail if they were ordered as 6 separate individual drawings. This is also why we included this discount for customers.

  • Why is the minimum resolution 1600 by 1080 pixels?

We listened to our customers and, aside from sharing the drawing on social networks, they also wanted to: use it as a desktop background and print it to mount on their wall.

We choose a minimum width of 1600 because this was slightly lower than a scanned piece of paper at 150 DPI. We choose a minimum height of 1080 pixels because of the new standard of 1080p High Definition screens. This choosen resolution displays excellent on any computer/TV screen as well as prints with fair quality.

  • How do customers find my work?

When a customer arrives at the site through an advertisement, they browse through artist samples. As our artist base grows, here are the best ways to be discovered by customers.

    • Create quality drawings of the samples. Customers use these to gage the quality they will receive when ordering from you.
    • Promote your own services on the site. Artists with higher drawing counts (more orders) will be listed higher on the site.
    • Draw each of the examples. This gives you multiple chances to be discovered as well as adds to your drawing count.
    • Complete orders on time and in a reasonable timeframe.

We are working to allow customers to commission artists they like. As a part of this process, we are also working on the ability for artists to showcase their external work. At this time, the only showcase of work will be that which is created from this site. Once our commission process is completed, you may upload additional works.

  • How long do I have to complete a drawing?

We notify you immediately via email when a customer orders from you. All drawings must be completed within 2 weeks of this notification.

Although 2 weeks is the max amount of time allowed, we encourage all artists to complete drawing in a prompt manner. Customers appriciate prompt drawings.

  • What about computer generated drawings?

Styles that are merely a computer filter or effect (or even appear to be) are strictly forbidden. If you run across a drawing that meets this criteria please flag the drawing to keep this site clean.

  • What file formats are allowed?

JPEG (with 50% quality/compression or better) or PNG (transparency not recommended). Not permitted formats include: GIF, BMP, SVG, TIFF, XCF, PSD, and other image formats.

  • What is my "Artist Signature"?

Artists generally sign each piece of artwork they create. They do this so art lovers can immediately spot that artist's work. Your "Artist Signature" on this site is simply an image of the mark you use when "signing" artwork. Your signature will be seen throughout the site when your drawings are shown. Users clicking on your signature will be taken to your artist's page.

  • Can I draw under a "pen name"?

Yes. You can draw under any name or alias you choose--so long as the name is not offensive or misleading (you can read our Terms of Service. You will not, however, be able to assign artwork to another account.
